‘Anything is possible’: New Harrah’s Reno owner open to keeping steak house, restaurants - Reno Gazette-Journal

After Caesars Entertainment announced that Harrah’s Reno was being sold for $50 million, one question kept popping up, according to the property’s new owner.

What’s going to happen to Harrah’s Steak House?

It’s a question that surprised CAI Investments’ Chris Beavor, the CEO of the Las Vegas-based company that acquired the longtime downtown Reno property. On a day when Beavor was deluged by phone calls about the sale as well as the Reno City Center concept it unveiled for the property, he quickly noticed one topic that came up repeatedly in his conversations.

“I kept getting asked about the steak house,” Beavor said.

For longtime Reno residents, it should come as no surprise. As a fixture in the community for 52 years, Harrah’s Steak House was the place to dine in Reno during the restaurant’s heyday. Whether it be hobnobbing with the region’s movers and shakers for a power lunch or enjoying the occasional indulgent meal with friends and family, the restaurant was a timeless part of The Biggest Little City’s food scene for decades.

Even as Harrah’s Steak House switched to dinner-only service in 2012 due to changing dining preferences and Harrah’s Reno’s own decline, the restaurant managed to maintain a positive reputation. Harrah’s Steak House is rated 4.7 out of 5 stars on OpenTable, 4.5 stars on TripAdvisor and 4 stars on Yelp.

It also continues to have a special place in Renoites' hearts — something that Beavor would quickly find out. After hearing the response about the steak house, Beavor says he’s open to retaining the restaurant in some shape or form once Harrah’s Reno turns into the new Reno City Center. Beavor added that he will also be reaching out to tenants such as Ichiban to see if they are interested in remaining at the property after the Reno City Center transition.

“We will try to keep as many tenants that want to stay in the property as we can,” Beavor said. “It’s a lot of space.”

Roadblocks for Harrah's Reno steak house

The Harrah’s Steak House, however, could be more challenging to keep due to various issues. There’s the question of who would take over the restaurant and run it after Caesars hands over the entire property. Even if the company decides to continue with a restaurant at the same location, the new ownership does not have the rights to the Harrah’s name, which remains a staple brand for Caesars properties such as Harrah’s Las Vegas and Harrah’s Lake Tahoe. There’s also the question of how much of the restaurant’s fare can be replicated.

Beavor is open to asking for permission from Caesars about the restaurant, however, especially given the strong affinity that locals have for Harrah’s Steak House. Even if it doesn’t pan out, Beavor says he believes it’s still important to work on issues that the community is especially passionate about.

“Whether it’s the steak house or Sammy’s Showroom or anything else in the property we can keep that the community has a strong opinion on, we’re going to keep our ears open and try to incorporate them (in the Reno City Center project),” Beavor said. “Anything is possible if we get permission and depending on the economics of the market.”
