A Steak ‘n Shake drive-thru of the border of Riverside and Moreno Valley has closed after three years in business.
No explanation is posted on the building in Canyon Crossings shopping center. It is surrounded by a portable chain link fence.
The restaurant was a franchise in a restaurant chain that dates from 1934 and specializes in hamburgers and milkshakes.
On Tuesday, the location’s Yelp page described the closure as temporary. But the 3,700-square-foot property at 6231 Valley Springs Parkway is listed on commercial real estate websites as available “with or without Steak ‘n Shake franchise agreements.”
Steak ‘n Shake has been struggling in recent years, according to dining industry publications. QSR Magazine reported last week that its strategy to close company-owned stores and reopen them as franchises has stalled. Marie Callender’s is pursuing a similar strategy.
Parent company Biglari Holdings Inc. made headlines in May when chief executive officer Sardar Biglari told investors he could save $1 million a year by not putting cherries on top of milkshakes.
Steak ‘n Shake has hundreds of locations in Midwest and eastern states but only a handful in California. The first Inland location opened in Victorville in 2014 but closed in 2018.
A new Steak ‘n Shake, the Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians’ first franchise, opened in October in a new tribe-owned shopping center near Temecula.
