Cedar Park Grill Master Honored For Cooking 1 Million Steaks - Patch.com

CEDAR PARK, TX — At many jobs, it's sometimes hard to assess a worker's aggregate accomplishments in determining whether a bonus is deserved. Not so for a grill master at the local Longhorn Steakhouse who was recently lauded for having cooked his 1 millionth steak at the restaurant chain.

LongHorn Steakhouse Grill Master Jose Luis Sanchez, a Cedar Park resident, is among the elite class of Grill Masters celebrated as being among LongHorn Steakhouse's Grill Master Legends — a special distinction bestowed only upon those few who have achieved the blazing accomplishment.

Sanchez has grilled one million steaks after serving as Grill Master for 24 years, restaurant officials said, making him a true master of his craft. To celebrate his achievement, Sanchez was surprised by his restaurant co-workers and team members from nearby restaurants, members of his family and restaurant executives with a special event officially recognizing him as a Grill Master Legend.

"I got emotional, and couldn't even talk," Sanchez told Patch during a recent telephone interview, conversing in his native Spanish with which he's more comfortable. "It was very emotional to see the president of the company and my family. I felt like crying," he acknowledged.

His emotional reaction to being honored was warranted. Company officials organized the tribute discreetly as to not ruin the surprise, creating a ruse that he would be staging a grilling demonstration for the president of the local chamber of commerce. Even his own family — his wife and their six kids — were sworn to secrecy before surprising the patriarch by attending the ceremony in his honor.

"It was a complete surprise," Sanchez recalled. Among the honors bestowed him were a special gold chef coat, a $2,500 award and a visit from LongHorn Steakhouse president Todd Burrowes.

Originally from Mexico City, Sanchez has lived in the U.S. for nearly 25 years, having started his career at a Longhorn Steakhouse in Georgia. He later moved to Alabama where he met his wife before the couple had children — three boys and three boys ranging in ages from 6 to 18.

Reaching his one-millionth steak grilled is not just due to sheer longevity, but reflective of a strong work ethic. Sanchez estimates he grills more than 100 steaks a day, backed up with a team of ten fellow cooks.

Sanchez explained how he enjoys mentoring younger cooks, and agreed his devotion to the work sets an example. "Every day, I try to teach the younger people so they will continue at Longhorn," Sanchez said. Among those he's inspired is his 15-year-old son who has an aspiration of becoming a chef. "He likes watching me cook," Sanchez said with palpable pride.

Maybe one day, Sanchez said, his son might join him at Longhorn. And who know? Maybe he'll reach the one-million-steak milestone as well.

In an email, Longhorn officials wrote that Sanchez is emblematic of the company's highest ideals: "LongHorn Steakhouse's culture is rooted in the incredible people that work in its restaurants, and this award is part of ongoing efforts to recognize extraordinary individuals for hard work and dedication to quality."
